A senior citizen health care patient can sometimes end up getting referred to several different professionals in several different locations. For example, a senior's primary physician may recommend that the patient see a nutritionist, get physical therapy, receive counseling or possibly even get a psychological assessment. This can result in a stressful situation for both the caregiver and the senior citizen who is just trying to stay healthy. Making appointments at different clinics and following different physicians' orders can be overwhelming when health care coordination help is not provided. In fact, research shows that patients who receive referrals only follow through with them 10 percent of the time.
Luckily, residents of the Colorado Springs area will be seeing the opening of a facility that will contain several different health entities that a senior may need to visit. The Lane Center, opening on the campus of the University of Colorado on Feb. 19, may prove to be an important asset in the long-term care planning of an elderly or aging loved one. The facility will contain a senior health clinic, the university gerontology center and a clinic aimed at assisting veterans. Two additional clinics will be part of the establishment, including a clinic focused on exercise and a one focused on nutrition.
Care plans will span across the different facilities, and referrals can be made to physicians who will be just steps away. A big advantage of the new facility is that patients can receive both mental health and medical care. It's estimated that 25 percent of people aged 55 and older in Colorado will suffer from mental health issues that are unrelated to normal aging by 2030. This is because the population of seniors in the state continues to grow. Any Colorado resident who has an aging family member that needs health care in various ways should consider looking into the new facility as part of their loved one's health plan.
Senior citizens and the elderly need established long-term care plans in order to avoid issues should they become incapacitated. An experienced estate planning attorney can provide valuable information on wills, powers of attorney, trusts and other important estate matters.
