Construction has begun on a lavish senior living complex near the intersection of 123rd Avenue and Washington Street in Thornton. The four-story facility is planned to have 72 units, including 50 one-bedroom apartments and 22 two-bedroom apartments. The complex will also include outdoor amenities that are open to the public, including a dog park, a putting green and community gardens. Indoors, the senior residents will have access to an exercise room, a beauty salon, a theater and a sun room.
A local nonprofit known as InnovAge is responsible for the design and implementation of the facility. The organization specializes in providing services for disabled and elderly people, having already brought a 103-unit complex to Aurora in 2005. The Thornton city council approved the project last year, and InnovAge funded the plan for $22.4 million. According to the president of InnovAge, there is a huge demand for this type of housing – she states that 10,000 people in the U.S. turn 65 every day. The mayor of Thornton agrees that the need for senior housing is especially great in the area. There are already 45 people on the pre-waiting list.
The units will only be available to people who are at least 55 years old. Residents must also have an annual income that’s less than 60 percent of the Thornton average median income. Rent for the one-bedroom apartments will start at $438 per month. The complex will also be located under a mile from an elderly medical facility known as PACE.
This senior housing establishment might end up being great news for northern Colorado families who are concerned about the long-term care of their elderly or disabled loved ones. Affordable housing such as this can bring peace of mind to people by contributing to an overall care plan for family members who are no longer able to care for themselves.
