Early planning can do wonders for your estate

There are a couple of myths about estate plans that we want to address. The first is that the term "estate plan" can be a slight misnomer. Your estate is not contained to just one document that has "ESTATE PLAN" labeled on it. To the contrary, your estate is made up of numerous documents and entities, such as a will, some trusts, power of attorney designation and any guardianship or long term health care planning stipulations.

Lucrative estate on chopping block because of multiple wills

When most Denver residents hear the word "charity" they likely think about a cause to try and cure a disease or protect an endangered animal. However, charities also have a role to play in estate planning. People who have significant assets that they want protected can shield them with a charity. The charity provides tax protection, making their estate more valuable in the end.

Why you should let your kids in on your estate planning

When discussing the process of estate planning, the idea of focusing on the implications of your decisions comes up a lot. We consider the best way to avoid taxes or probate, and choose a trustee we can rely on 100 percent. While these are certainly important things to take into account, it is important also to consider the emotional ramifications of your decisions.

What happens when a will is contested?

Imagine a situation in which a loved one was living in an assisted-living facility in Denver toward the end of his life. Your loved one became very attached to a specific caregiver during this time. Realizing this, the caregiver decided to take advantage of your loved one by suggesting that she be included in your loved one's will. Not realizing that he is being taken advantage of, your loved one makes the changes to his will. Unfortunately, you and your family don't find out about the changes until after your loved one has passed away.
