Compassion, talent and dedication: guiding colorado families and Their Trusted Advisors During Times of Need

What about married couples? How should they plan their estate?

In our last piece, we talked about how unmarried couples and people who don't have children should organize and prepare their estate plan. For the married folks, today's post is for you. Let's talk about estate planning for married couples and how they can best position themselves and their families for when they pass away.

The first step is to look over each other's life insurance policies and figure out how much each of you needs. While your employer may offer you life insurance, often these plans may not be the best option for you. Explore your life insurance options with your wife or husband, and then go over the actual policy itself once you make a decision.

Another crucial factor in building your estate plan as a married person is to have a will. Yes, we've been talking about this topic again and again, but that only underlines its importance. Having a will is absolutely essential to keeping an organized and optimal estate plan.

Last but not least, you need to have frequent conversations with your spouse about your estate plan, and you need to talk about your last wishes. These are obviously important factors in any estate plan, so getting them out there so that your spouse knows is of the utmost importance.

Ultimately, if you and your spouse are struggling to put together an estate plan, you should consider discussing things with an experienced attorney. Your lawyer can help you complete and finalize this crucial step in your life.
