Learn estate planning basics at a free event

On Behalf of | Sep 24, 2016 | Estate Administration & Probate |

Legal resource day – September 30 – is an event that provides free legal education to the public from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Denver District Court. One of our founding attorneys, Marco Chayet, will be teaching about the estate planning and answering your questions.

Chief Justice Nancy Rice will kick off the event providing opening remarks at 10:00 am. This event is a first step toward the peace of mind provided by an estate plan.

Are you ready to complete an estate plan? When is it time for a review?

Everyone needs to have a basic will that lays out future wishes in writing.

For examples, families with young children or single parents can make a guardianship designation that protects young children. Parents of adult children may want to review an existing estate plan to ensure accuracy after the arrival of a new grandchild or the divorce or a child.

What about those templates? What can go wrong?

LegalZoom or other form providers are relatively inexpensive. But consider that these forms are not tailored to your situation. More often than not these forms cause more problems than they solve.

An attorney who handles estate planning issues each day can identify problems that you could never spot on your own. Then these can be addressed with a plan unique to your needs. Taking the time to consider family dynamics can avoid disputes and ensure the proper protections are in place.

How do you choose an attorney?

When considering which attorney or law firm to call, look at breadth and depth of experience. Is the attorney or firm focused on estate planning and elder law? Does the firm teach on the subject in the community? When an attorney who has been working in this field for more than 25 years speaks, take the opportunity to go and learn more.
